Breaking Story On Police Brutality At American Axle Strike!

by: djtyg

Fri Apr 25, 2008 at 23:02:17 PM EDT

The Union Girl has written about police abusing their power against UAW workers on the picket line at American Axle.  The story is at DailyKos.  I'm reprinting it with her permission.

Yesterday, families and strikers mounted a rally in Detroit to highlight American Axle's desire to screw their workers while continuing to reap huge profits and dishing out million dollar bonuses to CEO and other executives.

And despite more than 37,000 workers off their jobs, 3650 American Axle Workers on strike, more than 30 plants shut AND 3 different countries affected, we still have nothing From Obama, Clinton and Mr. No-Right-To-Work-tax-your-benefits-anti-EFCA-McSame.

Not a    F   U   C   K   I   N   G     Word. Not one!

So, the union and other allies, families and friends, put together a rally.  And then things went horribly bad.

djtyg :: Breaking Story On Police Brutality At American Axle Strike!
So, I got this e-mail this morning (really early) and I needed to share and vent at the same time.

I went to another American Axle rally for Rich today. It was a great success through most of it. I was astounded and appauled by this site right before us.
This woman, an AAM employee, asked to "jay walk" along with other women. As she did a Detroit officer put her in a "chokehold" and litterally dragged her backwards to his cop car and arrested her. I was completely amazed. This woman is an older lady - I am told she is 65 with a heart condition - and she didn't do ANYTHING!

Now, ya all know me. I am not one to keep quiet and I told Officer McGain this (the officer who did this to her). I am writing papers, tv stations and any parties connected with the Detroit Police force.

But don't take my word for it, take a look at the pictures

AAM CHOKEHOLD2

AAM CHOKEHOLD

This isn't the time of Pinkertons killing strikers and locked out workers.

AAM CHOKEHOLD 3

This is the 2nd incident with Detroit Police; police  represented by a union as well.  The first incident happened earlier in the strike.

Traditional media barely works.  They haven't been covering this, at all.  But that means that WE have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of American Axle workers.  Our neighbors, friends, countrymen.  Isn't it time to make a difference?

There is something you can do to help.

Important story. (4.00 / 6)
Thanks for sharing it.

No problem. (4.00 / 6)
Spread this like wildfire!

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

Where is the sympathy? (4.00 / 3)
Thanks for this info, DJ. I think its terrible that the strikers haven't been getting more sympathy from the public. These workers have built their lives around those wages (as we all do) and now the company wants to cut them 50%. As one striker put it (I think it was at Michigan Messenger), he's going bankrupt the longer the strike drags on, but he'll be going bankrupt if they settle for a 50% wage cut anyway.

The irony in all this is that the President has been touting those checks going out next week as helping the economy.  How long is that help going to last if people's wages continue to fall?  If they want to stimulate our economy, give people decent wages so they can spend the money.  One time incentive checks are akin to putting a bandaid on a leaking dam.

Worse (0.00 / 0)
What's even worse? If Obama (of the screw the auto industry campaign speech) gets elected, these autoworkers are in danger of losing 100% of their income.

Not trying to beat a dead horse, but the candidate you are backing for president will ensure another 8 years of a president completely ignoring our state, our jobs and our perilous economy.

(Gee, wonder why the unions and the governor isn't endorsing him???)

"Can't think of a witty comment right now."

Stop it.

You assumed wrong (4.00 / 3)
I backed Edwards for president and made no secret of that. Once he dropped out, I made it a point to stipulate that I would vote for either of the remaining Democrats. If I had to choose just based on personality, I would pick Obama over Clinton, but I think both candidates have what it takes to be president.

I just want this to be over with so we can start concentrating on train wreck McCain.

By the way, this is what Obama said about unions today in Indiana.

Obama promised a more union-friendly administration if he is elected, saying, "This election is our chance to finally have a president who doesn't choke saying the word 'union.' . . . It's not just that this administration hasn't been fighting for you -- they've actually tried to stop you from fighting for yourselves. This is the most anti-labor administration in our memory. They don't believe in unions. They don't believe in organizing. They've packed the Labor Relations board with their corporate buddies. But we are here to say it's not the Department of Management, it's the Department of Labor, and we're here to take it back."

Solidarity (4.00 / 5)
Analysts are predicting gasoline could hit $7 a gallon in four years. Dick Dauch won't have any trouble filling his tank because he makes millions of dollars a year. Wake up people! We need to support the AA strikers because the next worker being asked to give up wages and benefits could be you, or you, or me. Are you struggling now to pay for gas? Then imagine how much harder it would be making half of what you make now.

They have my support and respect (4.00 / 4)
It takes a lot of courage to strike in this economy. They have my admiration and respect for trying to improve working conditions for all people threatened by downsizing and outsourcing.
