Professional Journalists Should Set A Higher Standard

by: Christine

Fri Jul 04, 2008 at 14:56:42 PM EDT

I just don't get Susan Demas.  What in the world is going through her head?

Susan is a highly credentialed journalist, with a large international audience, who is respected in her field.  She's worked very hard for this.  Why is she risking this credibility by taking childish pot shots at bloggers?

This time Susan goes after Julie Powers, for one of her coffee talk entries.

But bloggers like Julie Powers on MichiganLiberal.com are willing to swan dive into the cesspool and actually slander McCain's heroism.

"So John, how exactly does sitting on your ass in a POW camp for five years (and then returning only to cheat on your disabled wife and dump her for the Budweiser Barbie) exactly make you such a military expert?" asks Powers, who does PR for gay rights Equality Now group, which I doubt sanctions her inflammatory rhetoric.

OK, then, Jules. Let's throw your butt in the Hanoi Hilton, break your arms and subject you to psychological trauma even worse than reading your own posts and then we'll talk.

The problem with this pot-shot is three-fold: first, Susan misrepresents Julie's comments.  The comment is lifted from the Michigan Liberal series, "Coffee Talk", which is a collection of links in an open thread each morning.  The writers who publish Coffee Talk often summarize the point of each link.  If you follow the link Julie provided, you can see that's what she was doing.  Furthermore, Julie didn't comment on McCain's heroism, she commented on whether his experience as a POW made him a military expert.

more over the fold ..

Christine :: Professional Journalists Should Set A Higher Standard
Even if you disagree with my assessment of that, the second and more egregious offense in Susan's post is that she brought Julie's job into it.  Julie's work is not relevant to Susan's point.  If Julie was doing PR work for "Citizens against POWs", that might be relevant.  The only reason to bring up Julie's employment was to make the comment sting.

Third, Susan slips into using language that is just indefensible -

OK, then, Jules. Let's throw your butt in the Hanoi Hilton, break your arms and subject you to psychological trauma even worse than reading your own posts and then we'll talk.

What a low character, horrible thing to say.

Let's set aside the fact that a political candidate who uses his military service as a political tool - as John McCain does - automatically opens up that service for scrutiny and criticism.   Susan is painting a picture of violence and projecting it on to Julie because she doesn't like what Julie said.  I'm disappointed that a journalist would do this.  This is something you only see with the worst of the worst bloggers.

Journalists are supposed to meet a higher standard; they are supposed to set an example.  Is this the kind of work that a Knight Foundation fellow is supposed to produce?

Why is Susan getting so personal with Michigan Liberal bloggers?  Until today, I found it slightly amusing.   I laughed out loud when she commented that anonymous bloggers on Michigan Liberal can post anything they want, with no fact-checking.  (Story was here but it's gone now)  Her comment wasn't funny, but Michigan Liberal's collective "harrumph!" resulted in 10,11,12,13 (I forget the number) front page diaries, all of them ignoring the simple fact that Susan was right.  And I secretly cheered when she bitch-slapped PerfectStormer for his Russert "eulogy,"  even though the bitchslap itself was an assy comment on her part.  PerfectStormer needed a good slap, and I really didn't care who gave it to him.

I've occasionally wondered if Michigan Liberal had an agreement with Susan ... you pick on me, I'll pick on you, and we'll call attention to each other.  That's what journalists and bloggers need most - attention for their work.  But today's article doesn't strike me as attention-getting tactics, or the harmless poking of a stick.  It strikes me as an attempt to intimidate; to suppress future speech by associating speech with humiliation.

Perhaps that's not Susan's intent.  Perhaps she just wants to inject some level of accountability into a medium that desperately needs it.   Perhaps she just wants to improve what's coming out of the blogosphere.   If that's Susan's intent, I hope she re-evaluates her methods.  I hope she doesn't squander her professional credibility over the bloggers for whom she has so little regard.

What's the purpose of linking Julie to Equality Now? (4.00 / 4)
That was gratuitous on the part of Ms. Demas and, I might add, inflammatory.

Don't know (4.00 / 5)
But I'm really getting tired of people talking about how bloggers earn their living.

Makes me sad (4.00 / 5)
... and more than a little creeped out at this point. Seriously, wtf? This is the state of "journalism"? Pot-shots at bloggers? I doubt Tim Russert would approve.

This state desperately needs more reporting on what is going on in Lansing and elsewhere; in-depth, investigative work on issues and ideas, closer looks at candidates and races. Not more gossip and innuendo. Demas is an incredibly talented writer - I wish she would do some real journalism instead of this bullshit. Give me a story; tell me what's going on. Contrary to popular opinion, I have to rely on the media for all my information. Bloggers can bring flavor, I need journalists to provide the facts.

I think you hit it right on the head with this observation- "It strikes me as an attempt to intimidate; to suppress future speech by associating speech with humiliation."

And that is truly sad. Mature people with something solid to offer will turn away, and what will be left is personal accusations and attacks on the part of people that have these really bizarre vendettas they wish to carry out. A chance for education and enlightenment falls by the wayside.

Maybe Lessenberry was right about the bathroom walls - but I never expected the "journalists" of the world to be standing there with the Sharpies.

They're always going to pick on bloggers. (4.00 / 6)
The old media is pissed off that they don't have a monopoly on "the message" anymore.  So they will continue to lash out at bloggers.

Yes, anybody can come on here or ML and post something that's b.s.  But the other bloggers can also call the person who posts the lie on their crap.  The MSM doesn't have that ability.

Case in point: Today Fox News accused Barack Obama of "flip-flopping" on Iraq, saying that he's gone from a plan of immediate withdrawl to phased withdrawl.  However, if they had taken two minutes to go to his website, they'd see that his plan was ALWAYS for a phased withdrawl.

Of course no one can go on Fox and Friends and scream "You're wrong, moron!"  But they can come on Michigan Liberal and Blogging For Michigan and make the correction.  You can't do that in the traditional media.

Also, Susan never answered the question: How does being a POW make you qualified to lead the country?  This isn't meant to disparriage McCain's service.  He served his country honorably and unlike George W. Bush we aren't accusing him of being a "manchurian candidate".  But if McCain's going to use it to say he's qualified to run this country, we need to be asking "why?"

Susan says that Julie should stay at the Hanoi Hilton for a while.  Okay, let's say hypothetically she does that and is placed in the same torturous situation that McCain was.  When it's over can we then say that Julie Powers is qualified to be President, no questions asked?

I didn't think so.

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

Some of them .. (4.00 / 2)
Some have embraced us, because we can give them something that they can't get on their own.  My work on the Sheriff & the County Coordinator are examples of that ... I do the digging, I publish the results, then they report what I have published.  I give them leads and some "political" cover.

And I am totally willing to embrace them ... I want them to respect me (or at least my work) because I access to their audience.  And as WK said, we need them because they inform us.  And frankly, I have a lot of respect for them.  The traditional media aren't perfect by any means, but I couldn't do their job.  I wouldn't want to.  This is a hobby for me.  No deadlines, no editor, no 15 years of training & internships, no writing about things that I don't care about.  Screw that.  I like writing on my terms, and I like people like Susan being out there to do the heavy lifting.

I don't have a complaint with people who criticize bloggers for our methods or our commentary.  My concern is with the violent imagery, and with bringing someone's job into it.  I didn't like it when other bloggers were doing it to us, and I especially don't like it when a professional journalist is doing it to a private citizen activist.  It's like a dog whistle to all the kooks out there.  "Go ahead and harass these people!  Anything goes!"

There are some lines that you don't cross, regardless of how you personally feel.

And this is (4.00 / 1)
exactly why I haven't visited your site in weeks, Christine. Even when you're trying to be heroic and stand up for people, you're still a catty bitch about it. You're so wrapped up in your own ego that you refused to acknowledge the fact that we at MichLib (by which I mean me) were defending you during the whole Credential Clusterfuck, and so you've decided to inflame a petty blog war six weeks later.

But what really gets my goat is this: people blog pseudonymously for a reason. People have livelihoods to protect despite our desire to blog, and for you to jeopardize that is indefensible. I don't know exactly what you intended to accomplish, although I'm guessing it's death by a thousand cuts (OMG FOR THE TENTH TIME: I WAS DEFENDING YOU PEOPLE).

I hope the other users of BFM realize that their personal information is not safe with you, and that you will use anything you can get against anyone at any time for any reason. I hope they realize that you have no principles and that you will stick the knife in at any time simply because you can. I hope they realize that you care only about yourself and your own glory, and that you'll step over anyone and ruin anyone just for the fun of it.

Sorry about the name, (0.00 / 0)
Your full name came up on that blog post on Michigan Equality, which I saw either through broadcast on Facebook or Twitter.  I didn't think it was still a secret. It was the same post as it was on Daily Kos and ML.  So I really thought you were open about your name.  I'll edit it back to your nick.  I really didn't think I was outing you.  I apologize, really.

And that's the difference between a catty bitch like me and a perfect person like you; I apologize when I screw up, regardless of the intentions that led to the mistake.  I could have simply written 3 paragraphs on how I'm not worthy to be in your presence, I was trying to be nice to you, I was only repeating what everyone else said to me and therefore I am not responsible for my behavior.  And by the way I have issues with you.

But that would be stupid.

Yeesh. (4.00 / 8)
Someone sure has a voodoo doll with my name on it.  Ms. Demas seems to take pleasure in attacking bloggers and most especially bloggers associated with the LGBT community.  I only wish that she applied her extensive journalist credentials and education to her work.

I've never met Ms. Demas and given her vitriolic personal attacks, I have no desire to do so.  Being a Christian, I will continue to pray for her.  (Notice the insertion of an irrelevant subject?  I learned that from Ms. Demas, Mistress of the Right Wing non sequitur.)

Thank you all for coming to the defense of bloggers and me in particular.  I'm out of town through Thursday (business trip plus my Mom's major heart surgery) and I just don't have time to deal with this.

Just say the word (4.00 / 5)
I know you and I have had differences of opinions, Julie, but this personal bashing by Ms. Demas is way out of bounds. Just say the word and I can have my posse of reporter friends show up and kick her @ss!

LOL

I Agree (4.00 / 4)
If it keeps up at this level, you can count on a lot more people speaking up about it.

And Stormer, since I know you're around here somewhere, I really am sorry about using your first name in my post.  I shouldn't have assumed that it was public, based on it being published in one post.

Well... (4.00 / 3)
One of these days I'm going to learn not to say the first words that come to mind. I assume the next day God will assume his work is done and pluck me from this Earth. I'm a reactionary person and a reactionary blogger, and I don't know that there's much I can do about it.

Then I spent the morning pondering the old saying "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Actually I spent the morning going down to Grand Haven to see Wanted, which is hands-down the best movie I've ever seen and the best $4.00 I've spent in ages, but that's beside the point.

The point is that your issues with me and my issues with you were not germane to the original discussion about the White Trash Pundit, and to drag me into your issues with SJD was a pretty shitty thing to do. Then again, if I end up being a casualty in the war between the blogs and SJD, so be it.

For the time being I'm going to be stepping away from MichLib save for my Wednesday Coffee Talk responsibilities. For those of you (such as the White Trash Pundit) who get paid to get involved in fracases like this one, good for you--you won. I, on the other hand, have to put in a 40-hour week at a job I hate so that Huntington Bank doesn't repo my car and United Healthcare doesn't cancel my health insurance.

I wish you luck in your fight against the waste of oxygen known as Susan J. Demas.

Self importance (4.00 / 3)
Nah, it's more likely just her way of making herself seem important. One of the surest signs of a egomaniac diva is the "everyone is out to get me" syndrome.

Since she dutifully cross-linked the diary, every person with a 6th grade education will see my LOL notation - IN ALL CAPS - and wonder what type of delusional drugs she's taking. Meanwhile, I'll stop posting on this issue and hope she just goes away.

Well so much for my grand scheme to gain her trust ("I don't care if you pick on them") and therefore be able to influence her behavior ("but you've gone too far, missy!")

Yep, that went over like a lead balloon.

Ah, the things I get myself into.

In that case.... (4.00 / 4)
I'm promising that upon the word of JPowers, I will send 1,000 flying monkeys to the house of Susan Demas, which I will oversee with a crystal ball.

I do this in the hopes that I'll see this in her next column:

Djtyg, a blogger who recently outed himself as Donald Bortz after announcing his run for Oakland County Commissioner, has threatened to send a battalion of flying monkeys to my house, which he will oversee with a crystal ball...

I couldn't buy ad space like that!:)
