Good Morning Michigan! Tuesday 2.0 April 7, 2009

by: Christine

Tue Apr 07, 2009 at 05:00:00 AM EDT

Good Morning Michigan!  Today is April 7, 2009, and we have yet another Tuesday 2.0.

Today I'd like to talk about Everywun.com. Everywun is a web 2.0 social networking(ish) site that endeavors to make it possible for you to support a cause without spending a dime.  Here's how it works:

1)  Sign up for a free account at www.everywun.com
2)  Choose your cause.  You have 5 to choose from:  Animals (The Humane Society), Education (Books for Africa), Environment (Trees for the Future), Health (World Vision), and Poverty (UN World Food Project).
3)  Earn credits by adding a badge to your site, playing trivia, recruiting a friend, or reading a newsletter.
4) Redeem your credits.

I just joined yesterday, and I played some trivia, so I had 164 points to spend.  I planted a tree.

Everywun was launched last December by 25 year old Dan Jacobs.

"When I traveled across the country, I asked people what was stopping them from participating in charities and was told again and again they lacked time and money," Jacobs said. "My idea was to create a world in which it's easy to participate in philanthropy and you don't have to part with resources you don't have."

...

With Everywun, Jacobs is part of a movement led mostly by young bloggers, budding philanthropists and social entrepreneurs who are using the Internet to promote favorite causes, link to specific needs - such as school supplies in a particular classroom - and raise money and awareness through viral networking.

"Social networking is one of the most powerful tools for a nonprofit," said Michael Trigg, a vice president at San Francisco's Hi5, one of the world's largest social-networking sites. "One of the really unique attributes of a social network is what we call 'ambient awareness,' where by linking to a nonprofit, you create buzz and awareness in a noninvasive way."

There's no risk at all to Everywun participants.  So give it a shot.  Sign up at www.everywun.com , or just follow the Everywun widget on the left, above the video wall.

Answer to yesterday's Michigan trivia:

You bet!

Detroit's Reverend Clarence L. Franklin was a preacher, successful recording artist, and a dedicated civil rights leader.

More here and here.

Today's Michigan trivia:

This man designed the diamond shaped signs for Michigan's trunk lines, drafted Michigan's first official road maps, and introduced the first roadside picnic table.

Today in Michigan history:

1947 - Henry Ford dies.  According to one Ford biographer, "at the time of his death, Henry Ford was summed up as a patriot, philanthropist, philosopher, sociologist, reformer, economist, teacher, and above all, a man of simple tastes. He was widely depicted as an inspiration of youth and symbol of individualism, American ingenuity, free enterprise and America itself." Scores of Michiganians eulogized the 83-year-old Ford. Michigan senator Arthur Vandenberg noted that "he probably had as great an impact on his time as if he had been president of the United States."  Via Michigan History Magazine

Signe Wilkinson:

That's it.  Enjoy Tuesday!

The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations.

MSU lost. (0.00 / 0)
Oh well.  Anyone who lived in Michigan during the early 90's knows not to put too much emotional stock into college basketball.

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

The good news is (4.00 / 2)
It was a wild ride. They gave us humongous bragging rights for several weeks. Something to believe in. And please let's not forget the $50 million shot in the arm of our economy.

Yeah, MSU lost but just think of all the sofas that will live to see another day.

"Can't think of a witty comment right now."
