Governor Granholm released this statement yesterday:
"I am increasingly disappointed that the president continues to disregard the resounding voice of the American majority, medical and scientific researchers, and patient advocacy groups who favor embryonic stem cell research. Stem cell research offers great hope to those who suffer from disabilities and disease. We must now rely on strong bipartisan support from Congress to override the president's veto and return that hope to these individuals. I also want to encourage the Michigan Legislature to pass bills introduced in both the House and Senate that would lift restrictions on embryonic stem cell research and improve treatment and provide life-saving cures to Michigan residents with incapacitating illnesses."
The Governor's statement addresses the stem cell veto that Bush signed yesterday. Once again, the President puts politics over life issues, as he panders to his evangelical base.
The Governor has long argued that stem cell research would not only save lives, but it would stir economic development in Michigan, due to our top rate research facilities here. (Funny how Republicans have no problem crying "jobs jobs jobs!" when they want to give businesses free reign to poison your water and your air, but then they whine about having a conscience when it comes to jobs created by scientific advancement.)
"Around the nation, state after state is saying yes to life and cures -- and yes to jobs -- by embracing and investing in embryonic stem cell research. It's time for Michigan to do the same,"
Stem cell research just makes sense.
You can help support the advancement of stem cell research by signing the Gov's stem cell petition.
