Shiawassee Sheriff Attacks Blogs

by: Christine

Sun Mar 02, 2008 at 11:30:53 AM EST

As you may recall, out here in Shiawassee we have a little issue with our Sheriff.  We blogged about it here, here, and here.

The Sheriff has finally responded to our concerns ... by lashing out at blogs.  Here is his statement, published as a letter to the editor in the Sunday Independent of 3/2/08:

Editor, The Independent

I would like to take this opportunity to address the citizens of Shiawassee County about a story that first appeared in the (Owosso) Argus Press on Jan. 24, 2008.

...

The (Owosso) Argus Press published a story alleging that I assaulted the officer without obtaining my statement or the report that was issued to the Board of Commissioners.

The Argus Press gathered most of their information from a local blog. (A blog is an Internet Web log where individuals can post anonymously and write anything without any accountability. The Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce had a community forum/blog but it was halted because of negativity and untruthful information.)

When the reporter for the Argus Press asked me about the incident I stated: "There was not an assault and that she was attacking the integrity and credibility of this office with rumors, gossip and political here-say from political blogs with anonymous posters.

"There are 73,000 residents of this county that depend on this office for a major portion of their public safety. If you destroy the integrity and credibility of this department then be prepared to be held responsible for your actions." This quote was not reported accurately in the Argus Press.

Several days later when I was on my way home from church the same reporter called me about an accident that occurred the previous day. I told her that if she wanted a copy of the accident report then she could get it after it has been reviewed.

She became very offensive and wanted the report immediately. I told her that as per normal policy, which is after my review, I would release it.

She continued to be very persistent that I give her the report that day and I told her to submit a FOIA request. The next story that appeared in the Argus claimed that I was making good on my threats. They claimed "Before the story ran, Wilson threatened the Argus Press, saying the paper wouldn't receive any information from his department if it was published." This is simply not true and originally appeared on the blogs. Following the story they started submitting FOIA requests for all accidents handled by the department.

The stories and editorials continued so I met with the editor of the Argus Press and we came to a gentleman's agreement about releasing accident information. I thought everything had been resolved yet the Argus Press continues to state that the department isn't providing information.

Local bloggers and reporters claim that I am using "bullying" tactics to spread fear and intimidation. In fact, local bloggers, political operatives and possible candidates are trying to bully me into not running.

I am running for office and will not be intimidated by partisan politics, blogs and inaccurate reporting nor will I continue to discuss this matter in the press. This issue was resolved last May when the official report given to the board of commissioners stated that an assault did not occur, there was not a hostile work environment and that I was not in violation of any county policy.

It is my hope that the department and I can focus on public safety instead of dealing with false allegations posted on blogs.

Bloggers have tried to charge me, convict me and sentence me without due process under the Constitution - even some in the news media have bought into it.

As always, I have an open door policy and if citizens would like to speak with me they can reach me at (989) 743-2297.

If anyone has a problem or concern about the Shiawassee County Sheriff's Department, it should be addressed to me as your elected sheriff - not to Shiawassee County Board of Commisioners members or the Shiawassee County Administrator - since none of those people have any involvement in the day-to-day operation of this law enforcement agency.

Sheriff Jon Wilson, Corunna

Here are the media reports that have been referenced in the letter:

  • Bumper stickers raise questions about sheriff

  • Wilson makes good on threat to withhold info

  • Shady Sheriff (WNEM video)
  • This letter is total crap, and I intend to respond to it.

You can read the letter in its entirety here.  In the next couple of days it will become available for download on the Independent's website, and I will add a link at that time.

    Shorter sheriff- (4.00 / 4)
    "Waaaaaaaaaaah!"

    Dig faster Jon!

    It's out there (4.00 / 5)
The Independent consists of about 5 percent independent reporting; the rest is press releases, so there was no question they would publish this.  But that means they should publish your response.  Let's see if they do.

Christine, when you respond, make sure to tell them you want it in ALL of their papers, not just the Owosso paper (see the list at top left).  His letter went to all of the papers, and so should yours.

So whose running against this dirtbag? (0.00 / 0)

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

Argus Press responds to Sheriff (4.00 / 1)
The Argus Press today responded to the allegations made by the Sheriff.

For those of you just joining us, here's what happened:

    1.  Sheriff was a bad guy.
    2.  Christine made a bumper sticker
    3.  Argus reported.  Sheriff didn't like this.
    4.  Sheriff punished Argus for publishing a story he didn't like.
    5.  Sheriff cried like a baby in the Independent.  (because if you have a problem with the Argus, the smart thing to do is to go to the Independent and complain about the blogs).
    6.  Argus responds:

The Argus-Press responds: The newspaper and its editors stand by our stories in their entirety and reporter Liz Shepard completely. Further, the sheriff alleges The ArgusPress failed to obtain his statement or the report to the county for the original story. Shepard initially contacted Wilson and he offered only: "No comment, there was no assault." The sheriff then contacted publisher Tom Campbell and sought a meeting to offer his side. Shepard called the sheriff again for comment and Wilson again said he would not comment, and added the paper would have to take responsibility for publishing the story.

The lengthy comments Wilson alleges he made and were "omitted" are not accurate.

The county report was sought and county officials denied its release, variously claiming attorney-client privilege and that internal investigations are exempt. We are still seeking its release and have requested a copy from Wilson - a request he did not respond to.

Wilson's contention that The Argus-Press obtained its information from a blog or forum is false. Our reporter spoke with a concerned citizen and relied on statements signed by Wilson's own staff while compiling the story (those statements are still posted on our Web site:
http://argus-press.com/specia... ). She also spoke with a number of county commissioners and attempted to speak with Wilson. All our sources are quoted by name in the story. None are anonymous.

In reference to the Sunday phone call about a fatal crash: the call would not have been necessary if sheriff's department officials had followed past practice and provided information about the crash the previous day. However, department employees told us previously that Wilson, in retaliation for printing the original story, was cutting the newspaper out of the information loop. Wilson required The Argus-Press to file a FOIA request for information about the crash, which was fulfilled five days later. In the meantime, Wilson provided the information to The Flint Journal without a FOIA the next day.

In addition, the newspaper received a voice-mail message from a sheriff's department employee spelling out specifically that any and all information requests would have to be handled via FOIA (we saved the message).

Wilson contends there was a "gentleman's agreement." In truth, editor Dick Campbell asked Wilson to allow deputies to provide basic information at crash scenes and Wilson agreed. No quid pro quo was offered. The day of that meeting, a deputy at a crash scene told our reporter he was not allowed to speak with her. The following morning Wilson and undersheriff Terry Walker both said they did not have information available about the crash. Walker eventually provided some information after our deadline, which was published the following day.

I bet the Sheriff really wants to assault someone now.
