Mark Schauer: I Oppose Censorship of Blogs

by: Mark Schauer

Sat Aug 04, 2007 at 16:23:06 PM EDT

(Democratic Senator Mark Schauer represents Michigan's 19th district, and is the Senate Minority Leader. Welcome Senator Schauer! - promoted by Christine)

I hadn't yet had the opportunity to post on Blogging for Michigan, but most of you already know that I think you do a wonderful job of discussing issues that are important to our state. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I firmly believe that blogs and the online community are an important part of sharing ideas, interacting with the public, and examining what we do as your elected officials. I've personally had constituents tell me that they find it useful to have access to this information and this type of dialogue.

In fact, I have made it a priority to reach out to bloggers, treat them as the constituents they are, and give them the respect and information they deserve as new media journalists. Their editorial content is up to them and I can tell you there have been plenty of opinions I haven't completely agreed with, but I would hope my colleagues would encourage expanding the debate and increasing the dialogue, rather than establishing this dangerous precedent of slamming the door in their face.

That's why I am so disturbed by the recent decision made by the Senate Republican Leader's office to ban certain blogs and the comments by his staff that implies that they are working on continuing and expanding this censorship. I plan to share my concerns with the Senator, his office, and the Secretary of the Senate, but let me be clear that I find this censorship unacceptable. I hope that this is simply a matter of confused staffers and a lack of understanding of new media on their part and not a firm, and in my opinion very misguided, policy direction that they are committed to.

In the meantime, please keep doing what you do. And for our friends at the Yearly Kos convention in Chicago, please tell everyone there that despite all this, Michigan really is a great state and they should come see for themselves soon!

Hello Senator Schauer! (4.00 / 2)
So glad to see you here, and thank you so much for taking the time to post your thoughts now, and at Michigan Liberal before this.

I am very encouraged to see politicians reach out to people in this way. In a day and age where every single thing you say is heavily scrutinized, it shows courage to step into this arena.

I am proud of the job that you and the Senate Democrats have done this year- keep on doing what you do.

And I hope that you continue the fight for freedom from censorship- as it stands now, Senate Democrats are prevented from seeing the thoughts of their constituents, and prevented from conversing with them- all of which is part of your job description.

Mike Bishop is now obstructing Democrats from serving the very people that pay their salaries. I don't see how that can be legal- and it certainly isn't ethical.

I hope that the series started by the Senate Democrats here is going to continue- time to stand up to Bishop and let your voices be heard!

Welcome to BFM! (4.00 / 3)
And thank you for recognizing that bloggers are the new media.  I think all serious bloggers rightfully consider themselves citizen-journalists.  It's nice to be recognized as such.

Senator Bishop's office has caused wizardkitten a great deal of discomfort, and offended all of us by accusing us of having access to Senate servers.  They have also harmed our reputation by suggesting that we are not an informational site.  We spend time and money promoting BFM, and we work hard to deliver high quality articles to our audience.  We put our hearts into this site, and it's an insult to have Mike Bishop's office go to the press and to other blogs, and say that we are a non-informational site, where people "goof off".

Senator Bishop should apologize for interfering with the peoples' access to the Senate, and for making such remarks about work done by Michigan citizens.

Senator Schauer, thank you for posting at BFM.  I'm sure I speak for all of the Michigan progressive bloggers when I say that you have our full support in your opposition to censorship.

Thanks, Senator.... (4.00 / 1)
Now go put the smack down on Mike! :)

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

The only way to defeat a bully.... (3.50 / 2)
Is to stand up to them.  Kudos, to you Senator Schauer, for not backing down one inch in the face of this unjustified action.

In fact, as a citizen of Michigan, I am willing to go so far as to say that I believe this is a First Amendment issue.  Namely, Senator Bishop is limiting our ability to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Senator Schauer, I know you have participated many time in informative and in depth discussions of policy on blogs.  I greatly appreciate your efforts to embrace the this important new media to better serve your constituents and the citizens of Michigan and for standing up against Senator (Chairman) Bishop and his efforts to limit your access to the people you serve.  I plan on contacting my senator and sharing my opinion, in support of your position.

Welcome & Thanks (4.00 / 1)
Your words of encouragement and sanity are very welcome.  Most of us are baffled by the behavior of the Senate Republican Leader's office.  It speaks to the moral character and values of Senator Bishop and his staff that they immediately assumed that well researched, insightful posts were the work of a insider.  It must be the kind of thing that they themselves would do if it was the immediate assumption to place blame on staff.

I'm grateful for wizardkitten's willingness to step forward and unmask both herself and the ridiculousness of the Senate Majority Leader's accusations.  I hope that this whole experience results in an increased awareness on the part of legislators and the MSM that blogs are indeed the voice of the people and that we have the right to be heard.

So what do we have to do to get you to run for Governor?

Be still my heart (0.00 / 0)
Wouldn't that be cool?

Another point I made on another diary that I would like to post here also-

It appears that Mike Bishop believes that his colleagues cannot be trusted to manage their own time. Well, how can they be trusted to manage the laws that will impact the lives of millions of people?

This is such a slap in the face to the members of the Senate and the people who elected them, it's not even funny.

Cheers Senator Schauer! (4.00 / 1)
It's an honour to have you here at BFM.  We fully support your ongoing efforts to get this do-nothing Senate to do-something right.

Welcome to BFM!!!

1st Amendment challenge anyone? (4.00 / 1)
As one of the trial attorneys who helped slap down Engler's attempt to drug test welfare moms, I don't think this kind of censorship of political speech and/or journalism by a state gov't could possibly make it past a 1st Amendment challenge.

I'd be willing to contribute some of my time on a pro bono basis to challenge Bishop's Orwellian tactics.

Anyone else in?

Count me in! (4.00 / 1)
This is pure censorship!

Sounds good (0.00 / 0)
And since this is a .com, a place of business, I'm wondering about restraint of trade laws too.

Hmmmm.

One of the selling points of BFM (4.00 / 1)
is that elected officials in Lansing read us.  So the ban, plus the all slander in the press, is making us less competitive for traffic and advertising.

All while I'm paying for an advertising campaign to promote the site.
