Schauer Letter To Bishop On Blog Censorship

by: Christine

Tue Aug 07, 2007 at 13:12:04 PM EDT

In response to Mike Bishop's censorship of BFM, Senator Schauer today sent a formal letter of concern to the Majority Leader:

Dear Senator Bishop:

I am writing to call your attention to how the recent content-based blog censorship by your staff has a chilling effect on constituents, the online community, and all of us as elected officials.  I would hope that you agree that freedom of speech and the right to express contrary viewpoints are fundamental values that we should all embrace and defend.  This is why your staff's decision to block access to a particular independent, Michigan policy-focused blog because of its critical statements is so disturbing.  I hope this is simply a matter of your staff lacking an understanding of the role of new media, and not something more sinister.

Christine :: Schauer Letter To Bishop On Blog Censorship

I have found that constituents increasingly prefer to communicate with their elected officials via the internet and blogs, as opposed to many traditional methods of communication.  As such, many of us as legislators have made a conscious effort to share our ideas and create a dialogue about issues we are working on with these individuals, just as we would with news outlets or concerned citizens who visit our offices.  We content that this is a legitimate form of interacting with the public and hope that you would share this vision (as is indeed implied by your own online efforts and new media staff).  posting to a blog about legislation is no different than having communications staff work on a news release or opinion column to offer to the mainstream media.  Unfortunately, the seemingly evolving explanation from your staff as to the reasons for the censorship and the insinuation that further blogs may be targeted -- particularly ones that "say bad things about you" as reported in one news story -- is cause for grave concern.

I respectfully request on behalf of my caucus members, the aggrieved online community, and our constituents, that you immediately reinstate the ability of Senators and staff to communicate with these blogs and cease any efforts to silence them further.  We may not agree with everything they say, but we must defend their right to say it.  Also, please know that in the future if you or your staff ever have questions or concerns about how my caucus or staff are engaging the public that my door is always open and that misunderstandings such as this can be easily avoided.

Sincerely,

Mark Schauer
Senate Democratic Leader

Thank you Senator Schauer, for standing up for free speech.

Senate Dems Rock! (4.00 / 1)
Thank you Senator Schauer!

This is what leadership looks like (4.00 / 2)
Mark Schauer has really stepped to the plate this summer by standing up for the dems and calling out Bishop on his excesses.  And he's been politically smart about it, too, by letting the facts speak for themselves, instead of blustering and posturing.  He's a hundred times the leader Bishop is, regardless of political party.

Senator Schauer, if you're reading this, please know that you and your caucus are making a difference.  The MSM press doesn't pay much attention to what we say on blogs, but the minority leader of the Michigan Senate has enough of a bully pulpit to change the media narrative on what Senator Bishop is doing to the state of Michigan.

Now if we can just get the House majority leader to show the same leadership qualities.

I'm going to frame this letter (4.00 / 1)
I'm not kidding.

Thanks... (4.00 / 2)
I was going to add that the 2006 election was a pretty wild ride in Michigan.  Nationally, a few people were predicting a democratic rout in Congress, but here in Michigan nobody really expected us to even come close in the legislature, and we were even worried about losing the gubanatorial race.  In fact, the dems almost took over both houses of the legislature without really trying or expecting to win.  We didn't know which party would control the senate until well into the afternoon after the election.  Talk about an accidental victory...

My point is, democratic power in the legislature is in its fledgling stage, especially considering how gerrymandered the districts are.  But the senate dems are catching on mighty fast that this is what the voters want from them, regardless of whether we're center or left--we want democrats who stand up and fight for democratic values, instead of cowering for fear of being painted as too far left.  Reading Senator Schauer's letter, and the other blog posts from dems like Senator Cherry, I have high hopes for this caucus, and a lot of gratitude.

And more gratitude for you and Christine.  Who would have thought when you started this blog a month ago that you'd be at the center of a story like this?  I would have settled for a pony and some occasional snark ;-)

Thank you (4.00 / 1)
No, I didn't expect this. Not at all.

I would write more, but I am absolutely exhausted at this point. This has been 24/7 since it all started, even with the lull over the weekend.

I love the Senate Dems and Mark Schauer. Just love them. That is why I sing their praises and go after the Republicans and Mike Bishop.

Bishop has been obstructing progress all year. All year. On everything. And it's about time that people noticed this.

Plus, he was disrespectful to my Governor... and we all know how I feel about that.

Jennifer's Junkyard Dog strikes again.

OMG (4.00 / 1)
Omigod, where did you find that quote?  That is the scariest thing I've read since...well, since this morning, when I saw the bit about the McCain staffer who got busted for soliciting for sex in a public park restroom and claimed he did it because he thought it would keep him from being robbed.

You just can't make this stuff up.

I had it (4.00 / 1)
... here.

Part of all that "inside information" that came from Gongwer.
