As Economy Collapses, McCain Insults America

You know Jim Cramer. He's the host of CNBC's "Mad Money". Basically he screams at you about the stock markets and investment. Big guru. I'm not good with screamers, so I can't watch him for more than a minute without having to change the channel. Besides, I don't have any money anyway.

He was on the Today Show this morning, he was calm, he was quiet, and his advice was this: Get out. Get your money out of the market. And he panned, it's "hard to say this on TV".

Chilling.

As I write this, the Feds are busy trying to find ways to pump more money into the market, moving up TAF auctions, paying interest, etc., don't ask me to explain it. Indications are, the bailout can't come fast enough to alleviate this crisis, and the shock waves are traveling the globe as foreign markets tank and governments move to bail out their financial institutions.

Investors have come to the realization that the Bush administration's $700 billion rescue plan won't work quickly enough to unfreeze the credit markets, and that many banks are still having difficulties gaining access to cash.

With dawning horror, everyone is starting to realize that, oh dear God, the fast and loose free market Republicans broke the world economy, and we are in for a "deep and painful recession".

Employers are shedding jobs at the fastest clip since 2003.

Increasingly skittish employers dropped the ax even harder in September, chopping payrolls by 159,000 - more than double the cuts made just one month before. It was the ninth straight month of job losses. A staggering 760,000 jobs have disappeared so far this year.

Consumers - the lifeblood of the American economy - have stopped spending.

In response to the falling value of their homes and high gasoline prices, Americans have become more frugal all year. But in recent weeks, as the financial crisis reverberated from Wall Street to Washington, consumers appear to have cut back sharply. Even with the government beginning a giant bailout of the financial system, their confidence may have been too shaken for them to resume their free-spending ways any time soon.

Recent figures from companies, and interviews across the country, show that automobile sales are plummeting, airline traffic is dropping, restaurant chains are struggling to fill tables, customers are sparse in stores.

Banks will continue to fail.

Here's a safe bet for uncertain times: A lot of banks won't survive the next year of upheaval despite the U.S. government's $700 billion plan to restore order to the financial industry.

The biggest question is how many will perish and how they will be put out of their misery - in outright closures by regulators scrambling to preserve the dwindling deposit insurance fund or in fire sales made under government pressure.

Translation: We. are. screwed.

In light of all of this, John McCain's attempt to "turn the page" on the economy and resorting to swiftboat attacks becomes all the more disgusting. Is this the kind of leadership we want?

When the going gets tough, and the country is in crisis, John McCain lies to try to save himself first.

In her character attack, Palin questions Obama's association with William Ayers, a member of the Vietnam-era Weather Underground. Her reference was exaggerated at best if not outright false. No evidence shows they were "pals" or even close when they worked on community boards years ago and Ayers hosted a political event for Obama early in his career.

How insulting to the American people.

Had enough yet? Make sure you are registered to vote. Today is the last day here in Michigan - time to put a stop to "more of the same" and get these people the hell away from the levers of power.

Cramer (4.00 / 3)
not much credibility in my book. This is the same guy who's been on CNBC Bubble Vision for years telling everyone "what a great opportunity the market is."

I agree we're in deep doo-doo at the moment, but that's something I've been saying for several years now. Taking your money out is never a good thing to do when the market is crashing. But that's my opinion and I don't give advice for a living.

Just once.... (4.00 / 3)
I'd like to see a guy with a show on the money networks tell people that "the economy is crashing because we've allowed the American working class to be screwed over for the past 30 years!"

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

LMAO (4.00 / 3)
Yeah, Cramer's a trip.

The only person I know with serious money invested in the market said "sometimes he's right, sometimes he's wrong".

Like all of 'em.

But yes, I would love to see that pointed out someday. They are slowly strangling the cow that is giving them the milk...

Retail vacancies rising too (4.00 / 3)
From the WSJ:

Vacancy rates at U.S. malls and shopping centers continued their steep rise in the third quarter as slumping sales forced retailers to close stores.

Malls are seeing their highest vacancy rate since 2001, according to data released by real-estate-research firm Reis Inc. For shopping centers, the rate is the highest since 1994.

Vacancy rates stand at 8%.

Duh. Our jobs, wages and benefits have been chipped away at for years now and Americans are tapped out. We can't spend money we don't have to help keep these businesses running.

Heckuva job running our country into the ground, Republicans. Heckuva job.

The word "depression" (4.00 / 3)
Keeps being floated around.

"Searing generational memories" was another one that struck me as well.

I have a house full of junk that I don't use anymore. Why? Because I'm reluctant to throw anything away, figuring it might come in handy someday. Why do I think like that? Because my mom is the same way - and she learned that from her mother, who lived through the Great Depression.

The Dow is down over 500 pts, and Palin is in Florida talking about Wright and ignoring the economy.

It's insulting.

On a brighter note - I got someone to register today (he was just going to blow the whole thing off), so that is one more vote in Michigan...

I'm the same way (4.00 / 3)
I tend to hoard canned and paper goods because my mother did, and she was a product of the depression too.

Over the past several weeks, I've heard people say that they've never seen our country in such bad shape in their lifetimes. The anxiety and fear out there is palpable. So is the anger.

Make it three of us (0.00 / 0)
I'm always slow to throw things away. I buy things in bulk at Costco to save (luckily I have a basement) money.

I make big pots of soup and chili and can them. Every fall I put bushels of tomatoes , corn and pickles into the canner. I have a stand alone freezer too.  At least it makes serving dinner when I'm busy easy! On the other side, we don't go out to eat much - between always having something on hand and liking what I already have, it doesn't seem to make much sense. I'd just rather have friends over and share what I have.
