Obama, Edwards, Richardson withdraw from MI primary

by: wizardkitten

Tue Oct 09, 2007 at 13:44:29 PM EDT

Well. What to do now.

Speculation that they would lose to Hillary anyway, so they split.

Two of three leading Democratic presidential nominees have removed their names from the Jan. 15 Michigan presidential primary.

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama and former Sen. John Edwards both filed paperwork to have their names withdrawn minutes ago with the Michigan Secretary of State's office.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson sent a letter yesterday, also asking to be taken off the list.

Today is the deadline for candidates to have their names removed.

Will Hillary join them? The clock is ticking.

Debbie Dingell throws a fit.

I'm livid," said Debbie Dingell, a Democratic national committeewoman and wife of U.S. Rep. John Dingell. "What they don't realize is they're not running for president of Iowa, they're running for president of the United States."

National and state Democrats need to fix this. Or is it too late?

Stay tuned...

UPDATE: Count Biden out too. (Not sure who was counting him in - no offense to the Joe Biden Fan Club)

UPDATE 2: Deal Hillary in- and, oh my, won't that conspiracy talk start flying now.

"It's unnecessary" to remove her name from the ballot, spokesman Mo Elleithee said, because she has already signed a pledge not to campaign in Michigan or other states violating the national party's scheduling rules.

Let the games begin!

... practically anointed Hillary the winner in Iowa yesterday, and slanted the piece as if to say that Obama and Edwards were done if they don't win there.

So, what's the point of having an election season again?

LOL (4.00 / 1)
Thing is- we are going to have to vote for her. We can't let this state go red.

Although- the Republican field is really just a laughing stock and maybe they can't win here anyway.

I don't know. I'm not enthused about any of it right now.

And I still haven't received my bumper sticker...

Oh my gosh. What will we do now?

Gravel? (4.00 / 1)
My guess is the MDP punts to a caucus- but- there was talk off having a term limit proposal on the primary day, wouldn't that be called off too?

And what about the Republicans? Do they stay with the 15th if the Democrats back out?

Many questions here...

And... (4.00 / 1)
Since this was passed by the Legislature and signed into law- do we HAVE to have a primary on that day?

If so- and we have no candidates- perhaps we should request a Republican ballot.

Let's see (4.00 / 3)
Can't vote for Edwards, Obama, Richardson, Biden

Won't vote for Clinton, Gravel

Does Dodd even know where Michigan is?

Well Dennis, I never thought you were such a bad guy anyway. You better ask for my vote though. Oh, wait. You already have.

Not exactly a process I'd like to condone for picking a presidential candidate, but so be it.

Damn, where is Russ Feingold? Now that's a candidate I could get excited about.

I like Kucinich but always felt like I would be throwing my vote away.  I might have to reconsider now.

I hope the Republicans revert to a caucus (4.00 / 3)
With the way things are going, it might be an even bigger circus than the 1988 caucus, which ended up with two different state conventions that picked rival delegations to the national convention.

primary (4.00 / 1)
there are two options - Michigan can cave in and move it's primary back behind Iowa, and all those candidates will put their names back on the ballot, but why would we want to vote for any of them?  They are off my list.  Or, we could stay with the early date, and what candidates are left, and if we choose Hillary, we will just be rubberstamping Iowa, from the sounds of it, so why bother, and if we pick Kucinich, just because he's there, he won't win anyway, so why bother.  Right now I am so disappointed in the Democratic party, I am not sure I even consider myself a Democrat anymore.  I will never donate money to a candidate again, that is for certain, however this is resolved.  I could never vote Republican, I'm really not liberal enough to be Green - maybe I just won't vote.

I unsubscribed (4.00 / 2)
from their e-mailing lists today. Never was on a Biden one (does he even have one?)

If they're not coming here, I no longer care what happens to them. Good riddance.

And if we end up having a caucus and they participate, I'm not voting for them.

Kucinich! Kucinich! (4.00 / 1)
I liked Kucinich anyway, I just think he's a little too far to the left for me.

But I keep moving more to the left, the older I get.

I say to hell with the candidates who pledged not to come here, and especially to the ones who withdraw from the primary.  Now we know what they think of us.

There's still hope for Al Gore.  I'll write about that in a little bit.  (I hope)

Didn't have time (4.00 / 1)
to do my Al Gore post last night, but I'm going to try to bust it out today.  (Sorry Bob!)

My feeling about all this is that we were never going to have a primary; we were just going to set a date like this for two reasons:

1) To bring attention to Michigan's unique economic issues
2) To have some greater influence over the process next time

I never thought we would have a January primary, unless everything went well and the candidates were supportive of it.  But I think we knew right away the candidates wouldn't be supportive of it, because the DNC is not supportive of it.

I may be wrong about all this ... I'm not a political insider, so take that assessment for what it's worth.  (Pretty much nothing)  But I thought this for a couple of reasons ... mostly because labor fell in line behind the primary.  Why would they do that when they would be at a disadvantage?

So imho, this January date was mostly posturing.

Ok, then the candidates pledge not to campaign here.  That probably didn't have the effect of hurting them too much, because the pledge has that huge fundraising loophole that makes the pledge meaningless, but it alienates people like me.  I can't support someone who gives Michigan the finger.  Then they withdraw from the primary, on the same day as the GOP candidates are here to debate?  (The GOP candidates have been here twice in the last few weeks, by the way) This is embarrassing.

I'm sure they pulled out, by the way, because the pledge didn't punish us enough to bring us back into line.

And then we have all of these Democrats falling all over each other to say "Take that, Michigan!" ... as though they don't understand that a Presidency is at stake here.  Raise your hand if you think that a Democrat will win the Presidency if Michigan goes red?

Ok then.

The power play between the DNC and Michigan should not be my problem.  And putting aside the party establishment for a minute, I'm not impressed with a bunch of punk ass Democrats and liberals who have their fingers in the Governor's face because they think this is a win for them.  They're too short-sighted, as usual, to see the bigger picture.  Our job just got harder.  How are we supposed to convince the people of Michigan that a Democrat will do what's best for Michigan when these jackasses chose the party over our state?  If you want to say that $10 donations and lit drops and canvassing and talking to neighbors and working precincts until it gets dark do not matter ... well then go ahead and crow about smart this was.  I always thought that the little people mattered.  I thought the little people were the grassroots/netroots?

The little people need something to believe in.  The little people need a champion.  No one can put their hope in someone who says "I can't come talk to you because my political party is upset with how your state broke a rule that you probably don't know or care about."

Do you know the difference between the Democratic and Republican Parties?  When the DNC says "jump", the candidates ask "how high?"  When the GOP says "jump", their people say "on who?"

At least the Republicans are smart enough to give the appearance of caring about people.  Their values are so destructive, it turns my stomach to think that people in Michigan are going to start believing that the GOP cares more about them than the Democrats do.

Argh!!!

anybody in Michigan who donated (4.00 / 2)
to the campaign of any of these candidates should contact their campaign headquarters to try to get their money back.  I sent Richardson's campaign a message thru his website saying I want my money back.  I tried to find a phone number, but couldn't.  They have taken our money on false pretenses, that they would use it to campaign for the presidency, but, they are not going to campaign in Michigan, (or Florida) and now they won't even be on the ballot, so they should be required to return our money.  I don't care if Granholm and Levin and Stabenow all endorse Hillary Clinton.  I won't vote for her.  Somebody mentioned conspiracy theory...well what is it when a powerful candidate who a significant number of people really hate, is said by mysterious "polls" to have such a lead, and then somehow all the other candidates are blackmailed into dropping out?  Sounds like a conspiracy in action to me.

I wonder if they would return money (4.00 / 1)
You have a good point about that.

I don't really think it's a conspiracy- just Democrats shooting themselves in the foot like they usually do.

There are a lot of people who won't vote for Hillary- but do we really want President Rudy? Or Mitt?

That is where the Democrats have us over a barrel- they know we have to vote for them to stop the horrible evil that is the Republican Party.

Sometimes I think they count on it. Not a great platform to run on.

before all this happened (4.00 / 1)
I was actually becoming impressed by some of the things Clinton was saying.  But I don't like the feeling that I am being forced in one direction, with no options.  The Argus Press quotes Edwards' campaign mgr, a former Michigan Representative, David Bonior, as saying "In Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada, voters can look their candidate in the eye and determine who is best to bring about real change in America...In these early states issues matter more than money, celebrity and advertisements.  Voters want and deserve a candidate who represents real people, not corporate special interest, and this primary process will help ensure that's exactly what the American people get".  I am terribly offended - are we not real people in Michigan?  Are we not part of America?  Don't Issues matter to us?  I have never heard anything so hypocritical in my life coming from somebody who claims to represent the old style union type of Democrat that has been the most affected by the loss of manufacturing jobs in Michigan!

[ Parent ]
Yes, that offended me too (0.00 / 0)
I was leaning Edwards, but that statement from Bonior seemed like a slap in the face.

It seems national Dems take Michigan for granted. They might be making a huge mistake on that.

between the republican Snakes and the Democratic Rats (4.00 / 1)
I don't know which is more evil.  I have heard that Hillary Clinton believes that the end justifies the means.  I don't believe that.  All European countries have many political parties to choose from.  We need a serious 3rd party that is truly different from the two we have.  Not just more extreme versions, but truly different.
