Back on the ballot?

by: wizardkitten

Not sure this is a road we want to travel down. Would they just turn around and sue to get themselves off again?

Too many questions surround this potential move, if it's even possible at all.

Political leaders of both parties are pushing for the state Legislature to place the names of four Democratic presidential candidates back on the Jan. 15 primary ballot, trying to undo the damage to Michigan's political clout when the candidates removed their names from consideration this week.

Democratic National Committee member Debbie Dingell and state GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis both support the idea; Anuzis said today the Republican leaders of both chambers of the Legislature are on board.

Dillon is unsure...

"There are individuals who are looking into whether that is even a possibility from a legal standpoint," Bird said. "From the speaker's standpoint, I don't believe he has signed on. I don't think we want to comment further until we know if this is legally possible to do."

... and Dingell is rarin' to go.

"We have to be prepared to play hardball," said Dingell, the wife of U.S. Rep John Dingell, D-Dearborn, and a prime mover in the bid to challenge Iowa and New Hampshire.

Wonder if Mark Brewer has developed an ulcer from this yet.

I'm probably just .. (4.00 / 2)
..saying something dumb again, but am I the only one who doesn't want to vote for someone who doesn't want to be on my ballot?

If you're not interested in what a sit-downer has to say, it's going to take him twice as long to say it. ~my grandpa

What would it prove (4.00 / 4)
to put them back on the ballot again?  Most people wouldn't vote for them, and Clinton would still win. How would it improve Michigan's clout to have them on the ballot if they don't think it is worth spending the time to campaign here? I heard today (I think on NPR) that the reason they agreed to pull out was because they thought they wouldn't win anyway, because polls say that Clinton has such a lead.  I'm not sure I believe this.  What was the DNC saying would happen to them if they didn't pull out of Michigan?  The real issue is that it is not a fair election if polls are involved.  Whether they are honest, scientific polls, or frauds, people hear them, and it changes their decision.  It is human nature, and almost impossible to resist.  They never gave us a chance to vote, and now it is too late, because the damage is done.

I'm just so disappointed (4.00 / 2)
I was so excited with our field of candidates when this all started.  Now I couldn't care less.

Meanwhile the candidates for the rich white folks have been here twice in 3-4 weeks.

Blah.

I can't escape the feeling (4.00 / 1)
that there never was a field of candidates.  It was all decided right from the beginning that Clinton was going to be the candidate, and this is just part of the process of engineering it to look as if we voted for her by landslide.  Am I paranoid?

She hasn't won anything yet (4.00 / 1)
Iowa might surprise everyone.

And even the NBC news tonight was making noises about Gore getting in- I don't think that is going to happen, but you never know.

Still lots of time left in this game.

Trying to paint a brighter side (4.00 / 1)
By doing something to force these people back on the ballot, maybe it will help totally break the system so it can finally change.

That said...

I guess the legislature can do anything it wants, but I'm hard pressed to come up with how to argue to the courts that (and you know it will be challenged) a party or a state legislature can override an individuals wishes, which at this point are filed, notarized affadavits with the SOS, that they do not want to be on the ballot.

There is a reason why if you are nominated by a convention you have to file an affadavit within x days saying you accept the nomination and are willing to be on the ballot. I think the general presidential election is the only exemption to this in Michigan.

This just keeps getting deeper... (0.00 / 0)
Now South Carolina wants Clinton removed from the ballot.

A former chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party wants presidential contender Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to take her name off Michigan's presidential primary ballot, claiming her refusal to do so could undermine South Carolina's role in choosing the next president.

Former state party chairman Dick Harpootlian, who supports sent a letter Thursday to the state party Chairwoman Carol Fowler, asking her to pressure Clinton to pursue "every legal resource to have her name removed from the Michigan ballot."

Hillary's answer? No.

Catch this part (4.00 / 1)
"It's clear, this election they're having is not going to count for anything," Clinton said during an interview on New Hampshire Public Radio. "But I just personally did not want to set up a situation where the Republicans are going to be campaigning between now and whenever, and then after the nomination, we have to go in and repair the damage to be ready to win Michigan in 2008."

Quote from Hillary saying our election does not count for anything.

Typical Hillary two-step: the election does not count but she doesn't want to have to repair damage.

Earth to Hillary. Earth to Hillary. Not campaigning here and now saying the election doesn't count has already damaged your campaign. Big time.

Well to be fair .. (0.00 / 0)
She was saying that to a New Hampshire audience.

I'm a little irritated with New Hampshire.  They only have 4 electoral votes, so they demand the power to determine the Democratic candidate for the entire nation.

But if the Michigan GOP takes over the state in 2008 & 2010, Michigan will lose enough people to also have 4 electoral votes.  The candidates won't ignore us then!!!

Al Gore has won the Nobel Peace Prize! (4.00 / 1)
I would put this in a new topic if I knew how - you can change it if you want to - anyway, if there is a way to do it without ruining the ballot, I am going to write in Al Gore if they have a primary

Won't ruin/spoil your ballot (4.00 / 2)
but write-ins are only counted if a candidate has contacted a municipal clerk that he/she intends to run as a write-in candidate for a particular office.

Sorry - don't mean to rain on your parade, I want Gore to run too, but right now I don't expect an election law change on this point in Michigan.

But at any rate, a heartfelt hat tip to Al for his award.
