Project GREEN (Global Rivers Environmental Educational Network) is an initiative with sponsorship from General Motors over the past 20 years involving children to interact with the environment.
Approximately 250 GM employees have supported 225 educators and 6,900 students in local stream investigations and watershed action projects.
The project gets school children to learn about the rivers and streams along with improving conditions within the watersheds surrounding their communities. Getting the kids hooked when they are young is a great way to foster a lifelong relationship with nature.
The GREEN program also is focused on providing middle and high school students with opportunities to acquire essential academic skills including critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving and decision making, all while actively engaging in their communities around water quality issues.
The Leslie Science Center in Ann Arbor is one partner connecting educators and GM facilities
to assist with water quality monitoring, classroom support, community connections and event coordination. These partnerships provide educators with access to innovative resources such as a network of national and community support, online resources, technical manuals, activity guides and water quality monitoring equipment.
Saturation of environmental stories at an all time high, there is no shortage of info.
The problem is getting kids attached to nature once again.
National Science Foundation's Advisory Committee for Environmental Research and Education points to the center of issue when they said "in the coming decades, the public will more frequently be called upon to understand complex environmental issues, assess risk, evaluate proposed environmental plans and understand how individual decisions affect the environment at the local and global scale."

The volunteering effort consists of meeting the students at the river monitoring location one day for a few hours,assisting them in collecting water, and insect samples to measure the health of the river.
